PIANIST &
PEDAGOGUE

"Gabriel Landstedt lets the fast runs develop quite naturally, like a natural stream - not like clockwork.... Anyone who can completely surrender to the sounds falls into a meditation that makes you forget everything else."
-Bergische Landeszeitung

A musician driven by divine inspiration and motivated by creativity and a thirst for knowledge.

Gabriel Landstedt, Pianist

An exciting and sensitive pianist, Gabriel Landstedt has showcased his talent at various festivals and competitions across North America and Europe. His recent accolades include the Grand Prize and Best Performance of the Commissioned Piece at the Architecture of Music Competition, the Grand Prize in the Royal Sound Music Competition, the bronze medal in the WPTA Finland Competition, and the UBC Concerto Competition runner-up. Notably, in his youth, he received numerous awards in his home state of New Mexico, including the First Prize in the Jackie McGehee Young Artists’ Competition, which led to his orchestral debut with the New Mexico Philharmonic at age sixteen. Over the years, Landstedt has participated in prestigious festivals such as the Klavierfestival Lindlar, Chautauqua Piano Program, Art of the Piano, Eastern Music Festival, Collaborative Piano Institute, New Mexico Chamber Music Festival, the John Donald Robb Composers’ Symposium, Southwest Piano Festival, Salzburg International Summer Academy, and the Val Tidone and Brindisi Piano Camps.

Landstedt has performed solo and collaborative recitals throughout North America and Europe. This season’s performance venues include Carnegie Hall, Fazioli Concert Hall, and Palau de la Música Catalana. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, Landstedt’s online performances included appearances at the Art of Piano festival and on a series of online live-streamed concerts on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. In 2016, Landstedt recorded Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Albuquerque-based Duke Symphonette. He made his New York debut the following year. Landstedt has also been a featured guest artist at numerous high-profile events, including the Canada G-12 meeting of university presidents, the UBC Alumni Awards, and UNM alumni events.

In addition to his solo endeavors, Landstedt is actively engaged in chamber and vocal music performances. He has also been a supporting member of several large ensembles, including the University of New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and Wind Symphony, where he took part in several world premieres. Furthermore, in 2021 he established the vocal-piano ensemble Keyprano Duo with his wife, soprano Allison Landstedt, offering diverse musical styles from art song to cabaret to musical theater. A dedicated choral collaborator, Landstedt has worked and performed with choirs for over a decade throughout the United States and Canada. His most recent church position as Music Director at St. Timothy’s Anglican Church in North Vancouver, BC, will be followed by a post as organist/keyboardist at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Norwich, CT, beginning in September 2024.

Embracing the role of a dedicated educator, Landstedt tailors his pedagogical approach to nurture the love for music in each student while fostering self-confidence and artistic expression. The core of his teaching philosophy is to foster artistic expression built upon disciplined, fundamental technique and freedom of movement. Landstedt taught class piano and secondary piano lessons at the University of British Columbia, and he has also been on the faculty of numerous private music schools, guiding his students to achieve competition prizes and exam honors. Currently, he serves as a faculty member at Thames Valley Music School and The Music School in eastern Connecticut.

Gabriel Landstedt’s musical journey began in Los Lunas, New Mexico, where he began studying piano with his mother at age five. By age fourteen, he was accepted to the studio of Falko Steinbach at the University of New Mexico, where he was awarded the Presidential Scholarship and the Theodore Presser Award. Landstedt graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Music degree and Second Major in German, where his German Honors thesis earned him the Excellence in German Studies Book Award. His bachelor’s studies included a year abroad at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg in Germany, where he studied under Markus Bellheim and Silke-Thora Matthies. Landstedt pursued further studies at the Manhattan School of Music under Arkady Aronov and completed his Master of Music degree at UBC under Mark Anderson. He is pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at UBC as a recipient of the university’s premier Four Year Fellowship.

Outside of his musical pursuits, Landstedt is an active writer, with his poetry being adapted into musical pieces performed by the United States Coast Guard Band. His diverse interests also extend to outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, and soccer. Landstedt currently resides in Connecticut.
